Burt Hill's master planning process will create solutions that reflect in-depth analysis, attention to economics, and an awareness of the University of Dayton's culture and local community. Burt Hill will work collaboratively with the University and all stakeholders to employ a global approach to developing a Master Plan that will not only shape the future of the UD campus, but also the surrounding Dayton area.
A Campus Master Planning Steering Committee has been appointed to work directly with Burt Hill in developing the plan. The members of this group represent varied interests and expertise. Their role is to provide overall guidance to the planning team and all key stakeholders, reviewing and coordinating data and criteria, assessing concepts and ideals, and formulating recommendations and suggestions throughout the process.

STEP 1: Document Research and Benchmarking
Review of University planning documents and previous studies, including evaluations of academic space needs, buildings, student housing and infrastructure, environmental reports and neighborhood studies. Concurrently, the team will meet with key University leaders to become familiar with the University's mission and administrative and academic structures.
President Curran has appointed a Campus Master Planning Steering Committee to monitor and direct the Master Plan process. The Committee will be made up of a representative cross-section across the University representing student, alumni, and academic and administrative interests.

 STEP 2: Interviews
The master planning team will hold interviews on campus to engage appropriate stakeholders. These interview sessions are intended to be learning opportunities for the team. We will meet with all deans, vice presidents and others to gain insight into departmental issues and visions. Additional interviews will be conducted with Dayton area organizations to understand their influence.

 STEP 3: Focus Groups
Based on the feedback that we receive during the interviews, we will work with the Steering Committee to identify appropriate focus groups. Focus groups will be developed through close collaboration between Burt Hill and the Campus Master Planning Steering Committee. By engaging a larger stakeholder group, the team gains greater insight of the goals and challenges that will shape the Master Plan. The ideas and insights of the participants will provide the planning team with a current sense of the University.

 STEP 4: Survey
The master planning team has created and hosts an interactive web site documenting project milestones and progress. Information posted to the site will allow the university community to view plans and comment on the issues that effect them. Email-based surveys will also be utilized to gather important input on needs and preferences.

 STEP 5: Synthesis
Plans for the campus will be developed and presented to the steering committee for critical review prior to making recommendations to President Curran and the Executive Committee. The alternatives will then be presented to the University and the community for comment prior to final publication.

 STEP 6: Final Plan
Focus Groups have been organized to provide the University with a means for allowing input from individuals and groups through the facilitation of open discussion. Burt Hill has worked with the University’s Campus Master Planning Steering Committee to develop the list of initial focus groups. Deans and VP’s have been consulted while developing each session’s list of attendees. Between ten and twenty individuals are anticipated for each session. Each group will attend a 1-2 hour Focus Group Workshop to provide insight into the campus master plan. Burt Hill will facilitate the discussion through several proven methods:

a. Three Questions – a questionnaire will be distributed prior to the workshop that will ask three basic questions:

  1. What do you like most about the campus?
  2. What do you like least about your campus?
  3. If you could change one thing about your campus, what would it be?
b. Visual Listening

  1. Participants will be asked to review a number of images and discuss what they like and dislike about each image.
c. Open Discussion

  1. Participants are invited to share open thoughts and ideas regarding the plan.

While we encourage the participation of everyone in the planning process, it is important to make it clear to all that the plan can not include each and every suggestion. It is also important to convey to the participants that there are no bad ideas. Burt Hill and the Steering Committee will review all of the input and develop the best implementation options possible.
